Introduction

This index seeks to list the references in the Burra Record to people of the district who served in the military forces in World War I, during period of the war, and some war service associated references in the immediate post war period.

While I was reading and noting the Burra Record for the period of the First World War it occurred to me that there was a perfect opportunity to make a list of references to local servicemen and nurses which would be of interest to people researching family histories.  This list is the result.  To assist family researchers I obtained the help of Meredith Satchell, who has done a great deal of research on families of the district, in order to provide the information at the head of each entry.

The Boer War references are less common and some may have been overlooked, but clearly that conflict had much less impact on the home front, despite a great deal of Empire patriotism and excitement over events like the relief of Mafeking.  The numbers involved from the local area were small.

The Entries

All information below the line comes from the Burra Record and the dates are the dates of publication of the paper.

Above the line information comes from various sources:

·         Line one is the name as used in the paper and/or on local honour boards and monuments.

·         Line two is usually the name as we have been able to find from SA Birth Registrations 1842-1906 published by the SA Genealogy & Heraldry Soc. Inc., from which is obtained also the date of Birth and parents’ names.

·         When the name, date of Birth and parents appear in italics the information comes from the Australian War Memorial’s AWM 133 Nominal Roll of the AIF.

·         The date of death for soldiers who died during the war is from The Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour Database, which in some cases supplies other personal details as well.

  • Deaths after the war are usually from the Burra Record or Burra Cemetery records.  A few come from family histories and other sources.

Given the limited nature of some of the information provided by line one, the subsequent information is sometimes speculative and where we have been uncertain our doubts are indicated by words like ‘probably’, ‘possibly’ or ‘perhaps’.  Even though some mistakes in identity are inevitable we hope that this will prove of some help to those people doing family research. We apologise for any errors and/or omissions, but this is intended to be a starting point for research rather than a complete answer.

Caution regarding errors and inconsistencies

There will be some unavoidable inaccuracies, due to the following causes:

  • Errors in transcription
  • Errors in typing
  • The paper’s inaccuracies and inconsistencies with the spelling of names
  • Illegible printing
  • Many references use surnames only
  • Others used nicknames
  • Some men were known by other than the first given name
  • Use of initials is often confusing: they may appear in different order, or they may simply be incorrect.
  • Bert. (and its variants) is particularly difficult.  ‘B.’ or Bert. may stand for Albert, Herbert, Hubert, Bertram etc.

Where surnames only have been given all the references have been allocated to the same surname when only one person with that name is known.  It is just possible that this may conceal the existence of another person or persons with the same surname.

Where several persons share the surname the date, rank or context has often permitted a reasonably sure allocation of the reference.  Where there is less certainty references have included the code (UBI) meaning ‘unidentified by initial’.  Where the person concerned is unidentifiable with any certainty the references appear under a separate surname heading followed by the code (UBI).  In this latter case the references may naturally be to more than one person.  Some errors in attributing references to surnames is inevitable under the circumstances.

The most common error is probably attributing of a reference to page 2 when it is on page 3 so if it can’t be found on 2 try 3. (Or less commonly try 4 for 3.)

Chronology of References

Note that since the paper’s references are often from letters written from the serving men the information does not necessarily arrive in chronological order so that rank as indicated is sometimes inconsistent and in any case the paper’s credibility on this matter is not to be relied upon.  This also means references to a soldier being OK may arrive after his death and similar apparent inconsistencies are likely.

Omissions

I have not included all references to visiting military men, though some are listed.  Visiting entertainers generally are not listed and local recruiting officers, visiting military officers and the like are not consistently included.  I have not been as careful to scan the correspondents’ reports from neighbouring towns either, though I hope most references from Leighton, Mt Bryan, Mt Bryan East, Ironmine, Booborowie and Hallett are here.  Centres further afield are less consistently represented.

Once men had returned from the front not all references to their civilian activities are listed, especially after hostilities ceased in Nov. 1918.

References to returned men who came to the area after the war, as for instance to settle at Springbank Estate, are not consistently recorded.  Many are not easily identified as being former servicemen.

Note also that there may be more than one reference to the person on the page cited and that is not necessarily indicated.

A supplementary listing of major personal events like marriage and births of children and of activities that were war or RSL related is being undertaken.

Page numbers

The paper comprised four pages in a single sheet which the editor referred to as pages 1 through 4.  This ignored the loose page literary supplement which came with each issue and sat in the middle.  Very occasionally there was a supplement which could be a smaller sheet and if it is cited the page ‘number’ will be ‘supplement’.

A date without other comment usually indicates a very brief mention or a passing comment by someone else about the person concerned.

The Period Covered

References begin with the outbreak of war on 4 Aug. 1914.  The first actual reference is for the paper of 12 Aug. 1914.  References continue until the death in Burra of the last local volunteer to come home.  This was Cpl A.T. Winders MM and bar, who returned to Australia in March 1919, but remained in hospital in Adelaide and only came back to Burra on 27 August 1920 and died on 2 September 1920. (As reported in the paper of 8 September1920.)

Where it has been possible, a final reference in the Burra Record to the listed person’s death has been included.

Acknowledgements

Thanks to Meredith Satchell for many hours of tedious searching for the family connections and other personal data from CDs and the Australian War Memorial sources, without which the above the line section would have been impossible.

I am also very grateful to Stephen Boyes and the National Trust, Burra, for access to the original copies of the paper from the Burra Record office.  These greatly facilitated the work and were much more easily referred to than the alternative microfilms.  (This is also why page references are not to the microfilm version.)

Some of the information relating to A.L. Davidson, C.R.H. Dearlove, and A.P. Yeates comes from the book Journey of Remembrance: An Account of Mt Barker High School’s Remembrance 2001 Project, compiled and published by Julie Reece, 2002.

BCUS

Burra Cheer-up Society.  A group made up principally of women, particularly young women, for the purpose of providing farewell socials and rousing patriotic welcome home events.  Its president though was inevitably the Mayor, E.W. Crewes.  It also raised money to aid soldiers and for the Adelaide Cheer-up Hut and provided woollen comforts, Christmas boxes etc. for troops.  Members formed the Cheer-up Ladies’ Band which became famous in SA and saw service in Adelaide and elsewhere in SA as well as in Burra.  Its main purpose was to provide patriotic music for welcomes at the railway station and elsewhere and at patriotic fund-raising events, commemoration services etc.  It replaced the Burra Coronation Band, which collapsed when almost all its members had volunteered for war service.

This indicates that the Burra Cheer-up Society was given an enlarged photo of the person concerned to hang on the walls of their room.

The name appears on one of the lists of the fallen that were printed from time to time.

Death details

Usually indicates that someone from the battlefield has supplied an account of the deceased’s injuries and death.

d.o.w. Died of Wounds

DSM   Distinguished Service Medal

DSO    Distinguished Service Order

f           Farewelled.  f alone normally means that the function was held at the Burra Cheer-up Society room: those held elsewhere will be followed by a distinguishing place name.  The men often had several farewells, not only from different places, but also they might be farewelled to camp and again when they were posted overseas.

E          Egypt: though the term seems to have extended quite often to include an ill-defined area further north into Palestine.

F          France

G         Gallipoli

Italics Where an entire entry is in italics it means the person referred to does not appear either in the Burra Record or on local honour rolls or monuments.  Our attention has been drawn to a few persons with local connections who seem to have escaped such references.

k.i.a.    Killed in action

L          Letter.  In most cases this indicates that the reference includes the reprinting of a substantial portion of a letter, though occasionally a shorter, but significant extract might be so designated.

Obituary

As distinct from Death details this refers to a more extended account of the deceased’s life.  Surprisingly few soldiers got them and even some listed here are rather scant.  There are, of course, some notable exceptions.

OK      As might be expected an indication that at the time the person was all right, or at least recovering.  Many men sent messages saying little more at relatively frequent intervals, sometimes just a few words by cable.  The army supplied printed postcards with multiple-choice selections for brief messages which no doubt made it easier for the semiliterate as well as for the censors.

p          At their farewell social men were given a parcel of comforts.  ‘p’ indicates that they were not at a social, but the farewell parcel was sent on to them.

Contents don’t seem to be specified, but small parcels sent to the front by the Soldiers’ Aid Soc. contained a pair of socks, a khaki handkerchief and either some tobacco or some butterscotch.  They were probably similar.  Parcels were also given to returning soldiers and visitors.

P          Palestine: though men writing from the campaign there often have letters headed Egypt and when wounded often went back to the area around Cairo.

Photo An actual photo in the paper.  This was a very rare event.  The first contingent of Burra Boys are the only soldiers so honoured.

POW  Prisoner of War

Pte      Private

QM     Quartermaster

QMS   Quartermaster Sergeant

Record List

Refers to a list published in the paper for long periods, and appearing most weeks in those periods, containing the names of local volunteers and in many cases with sub-lists, for example, of the fallen, the missing, the POWs, Surgeons, Nurses, Chaplains, Discharged, Volunteered but Not Accepted.  The sub-lists are not as consistently printed as the main lists.

The 1915 list was printed from 10 March to 16 June, except for 17 & 24 March, 21 April and 5 May.

The 1917 list was printed from 7 Feb. to 12 Dec., but did not appear 24 Oct. through 14 Nov., nor on 28 Nov. and 5 Dec.

The 1918 list for volunteers was printed from 9 Jan. to 11 Sep. and then on 25 Dec., but did not appear from 27 Feb. through 23 Mar. nor from 31 July through 21 Aug.

The 1918 list of those who enlisted elsewhere was printed with the general list of volunteers except it did not appear from 20 Feb. through 8 May.

On 11 Sep. the hard copy of the paper from the Record office has hand written corrections which are noted in this compilation, but which were not incorporated in the printing of 25 Dec.  Some of these changes are indistinct.

The lists for Nurses, Chaplains, Surgeons, Discharged, Prisoners of War, and Missing, appeared only on 13 & 20 Feb.

The 1918 list of those who made the Supreme Sacrifice only appeared on 9 Jan., 13 Feb., 20 Feb., 20 Mar., 28 Aug., 4 Sep., 18 Sep., and 25 Sep.

Roll     One of the various local Honour Rolls erected to commemorate either the fallen or those who volunteered.  Designated by a locality name as well.

RSA    = RSL

RSL     More formally the Returned Sailors & Soldiers Imperial League (R.S. & S.I.L.)

Often referred to as RSA (Returned Soldiers’ Association)

SA      South Australia

S & SFA

            Soldiers and Sailors Fathers Association

Sgt      Sergeant

S-M    Sergeant Major

sp        Speech made and reported

To camp

The training camp prior to leaving Australia.  Most references are to ones at Mitcham or Morphettville

Tpr      Trooper.  Tpr and Pte seem to be used as loosely interchangeable by the paper, but Troopers were more properly Light Horsemen and often men so designated will be seen to have been operating in Egypt and Palestine

UBI     Unidentified by initial.  When used in references allocated to a fully identified person it is a warning that this particular reference has been placed by inference.

UK      The United Kingdom: usually England, but men on leave did make visits to Scotland Wales and Ireland with at least one getting actively involved in quelling the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916, while on leave there.

v          Volunteered: note that not all volunteers passed the medical and not all that passed got through basic training and went overseas.  Those that are reported in the paper as having failed at some stage of the process are listed separately at the end.

VC       Victoria Cross

WA    Western Australia

wallet

The Burra Sporting & Athletic Club gave returning servicemen a wallet containing £5.  The sum was the same for all, whether rich or poor.  Just who was eligible was clarified in a resolution passed on 2 Nov. 1918 when it was determined ‘that wallets be sent to all returned soldiers who have lived in the Burra six months prior to enlisting and that have at Burra – but not otherwise’.  (Despite which there do seem to have been some exceptions.)

Wd     Wounded

Wds   Wounds

welcome

This indicates a return to Australia and might include a telegram to the port of arrival, a reception with band and speeches at the railway station or a social at the Cheer-up room, or a reception elsewhere. Welcomes and welcome home socials, other than at Burra, are usually designated with a place name as well.  The Cheer-up Society was clearly peeved when ‘boys’ returned without notice or on other than the evening train and so escaped the welcoming sounds of ‘Home Sweet Home’ the speeches and the National Anthem.

WO     Warrant Officer
